After graduating from UAG and New York Medical College, Rande Lazar MD specialized in pediatric otolaryngology. He received his qualification from the American Board of Otolaryngology in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in 1984, and practices at the LeBonheur Children’s Medical Center in Memphis. During his fellowship, Rande Lazar MD also co-authored research on various medical issues, such as the management of sleep apnea in children. Sleep apnea is a disorder which disrupts an individual’s breathing during sleep. Although cases of sleep apnea in children occur less frequently than in adults, cases involving children are often misdiagnosed, resulting in incorrect and hence ineffective treatment. To manage sleep apnea in children, the diagnosis should indicate the specific cause of the sleeping disorder. When a child has enlarged tonsils or adenoids, doctors generally advise surgical removal of the obstruction. Apnea attributed to obesity can only be managed through weight and lifestyle programs. In some cases, seasonal allergies or respiratory disorders can also cause a child to have sleep apnea. Allergy or asthma medications can be used to control these triggers.
